NAPIER WOOL SALE

Downward Trend Halted (New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, January 22. The downward trend in wool prices at recent New Zealand sales was halted at the second Napier main fleece sale of the season today. The sale will conclude on - Friday. First day rates showed a rise on Auckland levels last week. Extra fine crossbreds and skirtings were described as being in sellers’ favour as compared with the. Auckland sale, while coarser qualities of fleece were 2J to 5 per cent, dearer. The official report isued by the Hawke’s Bay Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction .with 'the New Zealand Wool Buyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, states that the first day!s offering of 27,577 bales, including 659 bales of scoureds, was submitted to a full bench of buyers which represented all sections of the buying trade. The wools were predominantly ewe and hogget fleece with a large percentage of lambs and the usual offering of oddments, the report continued. They were drawn from all Hawked Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast districts and were typical of a January offering. These wools opened up in good order, being in the main well grown. The Poverty Bay and East Coast clips were in particularly good condition and this also applied to wools from Central and Southern Hawke’s Bay. Clips from the areas which experienced a a rather severe 1957 autumn drought were rather thinly grown, dusty, and somewhat tender. Brisk Competition The lambs, with the exception of the early shorn, were well grown, bulky and mainly of good colour, with some attractive lots on offer, while the piece oddments were of better colour and carrying less discolouration than they have for the last few seasons. Competition was brisk and came mainly from the Continental side of the trade with Bradford moderately active, while America, with some support from Japan, competed very strongly for the coarser types of crossbreds. Wools suitable for the paper felt trade attracted strong competition, particularly the coarser crossbreds, realising prices ranging between 48d and 60d. “Compared with last week’s Auckland sale, extra fine crossbreds, and skirtings were in sellers’ favour and coarser qualities of fleece 2| to 5 per cent, dearer. Lambs’ wool was erratic with some lots in buyers’ favour,” the report said. Range of Prices
