EIGHT PACERS QUALIFY
Maiden Trials At Ashburton The four placed horses in each heat qualified to start at totalisator meetings when they recorded 3min 30sec or better for the mile and a half in two heats at trials held at Ashburton yesterday by the MidCanterbury Trotting Owners* and Breeders’ Association. Russley Boy was most impressive when he won the first heat. Trained by D. G. Nyhan for Mr L. M. Denton, he is a three-year-old ‘ halfbrother by Medoro to a useful winner in Responsive. He came away over the last 75 yards to win most convincingly by four lengths from Guid Nicht, a three-year-old filly by Burns Night from Bendemeer Stream, owned and trained by G. McKendry. The second heat was won by Emulene, a four-year-old mare by Emulous from Lizzie Woods, trained by J. L. Behms at Chertsey for Mr R. Freeman. Results:— First Heat: RUSSLEY BOY scr D G. Second Heat: EMULENE scr J. L. Behms 1; Elect Scott scr G. Cameron 2; Dora Young scr G. McKendry 3; Artillery scr J. G. Hampton 4. Length and a half; head; head. Times: 3min 27 l-ssec, 3min 27 3-ssec, 3min 27 4-ss£c, 3min 28sec. Quite Contrary Sold The 10-year-old Quite Sure mare, Quite Contrary, was sold yesterday for 585gns to Mr J. A. Read, of Ashburton, when offered on behalf of the estate of D. Campbell. The sale took place after the last race at trials held on the Ashburton racecourse. Bidding opened at 200gns and rose quickly to 550gns. After several small bids, the mare was knocked down to Mr Read. Quite Contrary is engaged in the Otago Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday.
