Hockey PAKISTAN TEAM’S TOUR
Canterbury Match On March 29 The touring Pakistan hockey team will play the second match of its tour—against the strongest provincial side—when it meets Canterbury on Saturday, March 29. This date, allotted by the national association, was accepted at a meeting of the Canterbury hockey association’s executive. The touring team will play its first match against Ashburton on March 28. The secretary (Mr •F. P. Gay) said Canterbury players would begin serious team training next week. The 25 players selected for the training squad had all been keeping themselves very fit, said Mr Gay. In a letter received from the Christchurch City Council, a request was made that the association restrict its matches on the Polo Grounds to a minimum. “A recent meeting of headmasters of post-primary schools expressed dissatisfaction at the condition of the grounds for cricket and hockey,” said the letter. “The council was not aware that the ground has been used for hockey on Wednesday afternoons, and in future, it would be advisable to restrict the use of the grounds to a minimum.”
A request from the junior association for permission to organise a provincial tournament among primary schools for the Hatch Cup, now held by Canterbury, was approved. The tournament will be held in August. The New Zealand association will be asked to give its approval.
