CRICKET PLUNKET SHIELD TO OTAGO

Canterbury Beaten In

Last Match

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, January 20.

Dismissing Canterbury at 4.40 p.m. today for 242 runs, Otago won its final Plunket Shield match for the season by 123 runs on the first innings, and won the trophy by a margin of two points from Auckland.

Accurate bowling and keen fielding were responsible for the victory at Carisbrook, in a match in which J. R. Reid dominated both batting and bowling.

Bowling for the first time *in the series, Reid came to Otago’s aid when Canterbury was one wicket down for 142 runs to capture the wicket of Guy, out leg before wicket for 60. Later, Reid came in to the attack to take the wickets of B. J. Bayley and M. E. Chapple and finished the innings with three wickets for 15 runs off 19 overs. He did not bowl at his full pace but resorted to medium-pace offbreaks.

Fine support was given Reid by the medium-paced V. A. C. McArley, who took three wickets for 41 runs off 31 overs.

It appeared that Canterbury would overhaul Otago's total when the openers, Guy and J. W. D’Arcy, put on 100 for the opening partnership and there was ample time left in which to score the 366 runs required for a first innings win, but gradually the batting, particularly that of Guy, G. D. Alabaster and B. J. Bayley, slowed to a snail’s pace. At lunch, the score was 139 for one wicket, but in the first hour after the adjournment only 16 runs were added and Canterbury lost Guy*hnd Bayley. Worse was to follow, as Reid and McArley pinned the batsmen down while collecting the occasional wicket. From 161 for three the scoreboard read 195 for seven at afternoon tea. Eighth-wicket Stand The last resistance was offered by an eighth-wicket partnership for 39 runs by A. R. Mac Gibbon and B. A. Bolton. The wicket had more life than at any other period of the match, but was still not particularly hostile, although it took some spin. F. J. Cameron bowled particularly well, and was responsible for the first break through when he had D’Arcy out leg before for 60. He took slightly less than three hours for his runs. His partner, Guy, took 201 minutes to score his 50, and 217 minutes for 60. Neither of Otago's leg spinners had any particular success, although A. Moir beat most of the batsmen at times. He took two wickets and J. C. Alabaster one. Otago batted for the remaining 40 minutes of play and in that time lost three wickets for 26 runs.- The wickets were all cap-

tured by men in the Canterbury team for their batting and the match ended on a picnic note. Scores:— OTAGO First innings 365 for nine wickets declared. Second Innings G. H.
