PLUNKET SHIELD AVERAGES

Rabone Top Batsman With One Innings As a result of the latest series of matches in the 1957-58 Plunket Shield competition, batting and bowling averages have shown considerable changes. Good bowling figures returned by Auckland and Northern Districts players, and by some Canterbury players, have advanced their places in the averages. In the batting lists, the most notable advance has been that of J. R. Reid (Otago). G. O. Rabone Auckland) now heads the list from his one appearance Wellington and Central Districts players have slipped down in the batting averages. With only one match to be played, between Canterbury and Wellington, the averages are as follows:

Shield Points Otago has won the Plunket Shield for the 1957-58 season. With the match between Canterbury and Wellington still to be played, Otago has an unbeatable lead of two points from the Auckland side. The points are:—

Queensland Collapses (NJZ. Biuce Dooland, the South Australian leg spinner, gave his best performance in Australia since his last Sheffield shield season nine years ago by taking six for 97 in Queensland’s first innings. South Australia, first innings 472. Queensland 231 (McLaughlin 52) and 114 for one wicket (McLaughlin 51 not out).
