Table Tennis EIGHTH ROUND MATCHES
University Teams In First Two Places
The two University teams playing in the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s summer first grade competition are assured of filling the first two places in the grade, after the eighth round of matches last evening. With two rounds only to be played, these two teams are nine and seven points ahead of the third team. Avonside.
By beating Avonside by 8 matches to 4, the University II team assured itself of at least second place in the competition. In the absence of its top player, J. E. Kyle, the University team did well to win by such a comfortable margin. R. Prosser was in especially good form, and his opponents had no answer to his fine all-round game. Prosser has won 17 out of 24 singles matches in this competition, and his wins in this latest round were his best yet. A. W. Jamieson, by beating G. G. Johnstone, reversed the result of their meeting in an earlier contest Jamieson watches the ball right on to the bat. and puts plenty of power into all his shots. He will not be playing for the remainder of the competition, because of military training obligations. University I beat Ministry of Works by 11 matches to 1. but the contest was not -nearly as one-sided as the final score would suggest. Six of the 12 matches went to three sets, and a further two or three wins to the Ministry of Works team would have been a truer indication of the difference in ability. J. O. Moen showed improved control of his very thick sponge-rubber bat by beating T. P Staples in a long match, in an earlier round. Staples had beaten Moen, 23-21, 25-23, but Moen last evening had the slight edge. After eight rounds, points are:— University I 16, University II 14.
