AUCKLAND, January 19. Small countries could make’ unportant contributions to the development of atomic power for peace, said Professor J. P. Baxter, one of the leading Australian nuclear scientists, who arrived in Auckland by air tonight to study the development of nuclear science in New Zealand. Professor Baxter is Vice-Chan-cellor of the New South Wales University of Technology and chairman of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. His companion is Sir Leslie Martin, professor of physics at the University of Melbourne and an adviser on defence to the Commonwealth Government. They will confer with the Government, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the University of New Zealand The greater resources of bigger countries did not necessarily mean that smaller countries should not spend money on their owfi nuclear science programmes, Professor Baxter said. Australia had spent £6m on the atomic station near Sydney and he felt the money was well spent. The visitors will confer with Auckland University authorities

before visiting Wairakei to inspect the geothermal steam developments. They will visit all universities and D.S.I.R. laboratories dealing with relevant sciences and submit a report at the end of this month.
