SOLEMNITY BACK TO FORM AT WASHDYKE

Solemnity, which paced a sound race after los ! ng ground on the first day of the meeting, gained a good win in the Pukaki Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. He raced one out not far from\ the leader all the way.

Night Wind took over from Lillium with nine furlongs and a half left and was still in front racing to the straight, where she had little to spare over Solemnity. Closest to them at this stage were Lillium, Catamaran, Adoration, Zagar and Kokomo. Solemnity took the lead early in the run home and held on strongly to win by a length. Lillium, after receiving a perfect run, battled on well for second, just shading Kokomo, which finished well along the inside after being cilose up throughout.

Surie Queen made up ground over the last furlong to finish fourth, just ahead of the tiring Night Wind, with Catamaran, May Hall, Blacksmith and Signet Ring next. Sextant, Dark Valley and May Hall lost ground at the start. Winner from Invercargill The Invercargill-owned and trained Whirlwind caused a minor upset when she finished too well for the pacemaker. Captain Spider, in the Gleniti Handicap. Au Fait broke badly at the start, and Captain Spider forced all the pace, being closely attended by Marawiti. Whirlwind, Judear, Au Fait, Kaboon, and Lothario turning for home. Captain Spider was soon in trouble, and Whirlwind had his measure 75 yards out. Whirlwind ran on strongly to win by a neck. . Captain Spider stayed on surprisingly wtell after forcing a strong pace, and he was two lengths in front of Judear, which received a good rub through on the inside all the way. Kaboon, after having every chance, did not run on quite as well as expected, and he was a neck back fourth, ahead of Lothario, with Marawiti sixth, clear of Au Fait, which found the task of making up 50 yards too much. Delight was pulled up, and Dalgelia. Front Rank, Diomedes, and Honora's Last made mistakes.

Ladyship Surprises Ladyship, one of the outsiders; caused a major upset when she won the Tekapo Handicap. She was tenth when the field (settled down, but moved up to be 'fifth at the halfmile. Raven Dew made all the pace and led for home ahead of Jackaleen. Zelmira, Ladyship, Irish Wit, Reputation, and Allard. Ladyship raced past Raven Dew with ease and came on to win unextended by a length and a half.

Raven Dew set a solid pace in front, and his performance suggested an early win. He was a length in front of Jackaleen, which battled on over the final furlong from a handy position. Zelmira, which received a perfect run behind Raven Dew. was beaten off in fourth place, just ahead of Irish Wit. Reputation, Allard, Kawa, and Mossgiel headed the others. Schemer. Dozer, Seagull, and Lady Attack all broke badly at the start. Win for Wild Mirror Wild Mirror recorded a sound effort to win the Fairview Handicap. He was slow away, but raced up three wide to take the lead with five furlongs left. He led by two lengths from- Idle Jack racing to the straight, with Medoro Star. Kohika Lass. Irrigation, Bonnie Bess, and Blue Marlin following. Wild Mirror fought on strongly in the straight and won decisively by a length.

Blue strong finishing run to get up for second was a feature of the race. He was well back coming to the straight, but finished m '’rand style to beat all but Wild Min-or. , '

Medoro Star went an improved race to take third place, half a head behind Blue Marlin. Medoro Star had every chance. Idle Jack, after being one of the leaders all the way. held on for

fourth, half a length back, clear of Queen Bourbon, with Gleniala Lass, Kohika Lass, and Irrigation next.

Super Cloud in Form Super Cloud gained an overdue win when he led from end to end in the Rosewill Handicap. Thumberlina accompanied him in the middle stages of the race and they turned for home ahead of Estelle (three wide). Mighty Brigade, which broke soon after. Cautious Lady, Procrastinator. and Lucie Manette. Estelle challenged Super Cloud and appeared to shade him 100 yards out. However, Super Cloud came again and won well by a npse. Estelle trotted a sound race for second after covering extra ground over the final half-mile. Procrastinator came home strongly along the inside over the final furlong. but broke in third place just short of the post. He was subsequently disqualified for galloping. Thumberlina tired in the straight to finish fourth, but was promoted to third. Cautious Lady was placed fourth and was followed in by Lucie Manette. Mighty Brigade, and Merry Nora.
