ATHLETICS Two Records Set At Rugby Park Meeting

Further Canterbury records were broken when the Christchurch inter-fclub athletii season was resumed at Rugby Park on Saturday. Another performance, although not a record, was the. fastest time recorded on the Rugby Park track. This continued the exceptional series of record breaking performances of the first half of the season when at least one record was set each Saturday. For the fourth time this season the Canterbury discus throw record was improved when the Wellington record holder Borlase (Technical), now stationed at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram, had his best throw of the season to reach 148 ft sin. The previous record was held by R. G. Ball (University), who in his clashes with Borlase before Christmas, three times broke the repord, making his best performance of 146 ft Ilin on November 2s. Borlase has been slow in getting into top form, but his advance has been steady,, and he may even rival his best performance of 158 ft Bin, his Wellington record set last year, before the season ends. It must be a disappointment for Ball that when he has the opportunity for first-class competition his training is now severely restricted by the practical training that he is doing for his Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree. Two-mile Record

Having earlier in the season broken D. Reece’s Canterbury junior mile record, D. Dixey (New Brighton) took the two-mile record from him also when the two met for the first time this season on Saturday in the final event of the afternoon before the meeting was abandoned because of the heavy rain. Dixey’s time of 9min 27.25ec took Isec off the record.

For Reece, ,it was his first open race of the season, running confidently, he appeared to have the race in hand with less than* 200 yards to go. A fast finish has not previously been a strong point of Dixey’s running, but on Saturday he produced a fine burst over the last 150 yards to overtake Reece's lead of many yards, and won going away. It was a fine effort by both these young competitors, for although the rain setting in just before the start of the race scarcely had time to take the edge off the track, the rain accompanied by a cold wind change made running conditions unpleasant. Given more favourable circumstances, further competition between these two should produce even better times.

In the senior 880 yards, J. D. Macdonald running the distance in Imin 55.Isec, took ,ssec off the previous fastest time done on the Rugby Park track. This was returned by D. Beauchamp early in the season before he returned to the North Island for the University vacation. The time was a personal best for Macdonald, and also for Gerald Hack (Technical), last year’s junior champion, who was estimated to have run in less than Imin Msec for second plgce. Hack set the pace at the start, and after giving way to T. I. Crossen (University) for 200 yards, led through to the 660-yard mark. Macdonald. then moved' through and withstood a challenge from Hack with 100 yards to go to win by five yards.

Improved Performance In his best effort of the season. Kerry Williams ran the fastest three miles by a Canterbury runner since J. C. Daly retired. His time of T4min 12.4 sec was 6.4 sec outside Paly’s provincial record. A fast first lap of 65sec caused Williams to slump tn the middle stages of his race, and although lack of competition from other runners is a problem for him, he would have been better to let the field take him along for the first two laps. His mile times were 4min 33sec, 4min Msec, and 4min 34sec.

Valerie Sloper was as consistent as ever with the shot, and her 53ft Olin was just five inches short of her national record. With L. Jones (Toe H) still absent from the sprint fields because of the injury he sustained at Rangiora in December, I. Hamilton and C. Courtney (Technical) are emerging as the leading sprinters. Hamilton won the senior A 75 yards in Bsec, qpd the -first section of the 220 yards in 23sec. Courtney won the second section of the 220 yards in 22.95ec. In his last cbmpetition before transferring to Auckland, D. D. Leech (University) won the hammer throw with a distance of 154 ft 4in.
