WINCH FUSES REMOVED
Theft From Ship At Bluff
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, January 10. Detectives of the Invercargill C. 1.8. are investigating an unusual theft aboard the New Zealand Shipping Company’s vessel, Papanui, at present at Bluff. Seven large fuses controlling the winch gear at the after end of the ship are missing. They were taken, from a cabinet in the after masthouse between 10 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. today. • Two fuses were found to be missing on Thursday and these were replaced. The after winches were in use throughout Thursday until 10 p.m. but when work began at 8 a.m. today the winches •would not operate. An inspection showed that seven* of the fuses were missing. Valued at £5. each of the fuses are Bin long, 2in wide and 3Jin deep. They are fitted with a special asbestos core. Removal of the fuses immobilised the after winches until temporary arrangements could be made. Arrangements have been made to rush replacements from the north. The vessel, which has been loading meat was due to-.sail from B’uff early tomorrow morning. It will not now sail until later in the day.
