Opportunities For Study

rpODAY young men of ability in the Public Service earn rapid promotion. The permanent head of one Government Department has just turned 40 and is earning over £2OOO a year. And many younger men in responsible positions are not far behind him. This is shown by the 195657 Public Service Classification last.

The list further shows that many senior positions with income ratings up to £l2OO a year are held by men in their late twenties and early thirties. In genera) they all hold professional or academic qualifications.

Another inference to be drawn from the list is the ready response of young members of the Public Service to avail themselves of the privileges offered for university studies. In 1956 there were more than 1000 junior officers in the clerical division alone who were taking higher studies; 19 officers were granted study awards on full pay, and 67 study awards on special subsistence allowance were granted during the year.

The Public Service Commission is considering the problem of the limited scope for study for cadets with School Certificate who are stationed outside university centres. It is hoped that it will be possible to widen the range of examination qualifications recognised as suitable to the Public Service.
