The Value Of Examinations
Entrants into the service today are looking ahead. Staff training and opportunities for a university and professional training appear to interest them as much as the commencing salary. Promotion by merit is a strong incentive to make the most use of their education. The increasing number of public servants who participate in government activities overseas is not lost upon those who join the service. One of the attractions of the service is the good commencing salaries for entrants with higher educational qualifications. These are:— Higher School Certificate .. £425 (Increasing to £4BO after six months’ service) University Entrance £425 Endorsed School Certificate £375 (Increasing to £425 after six months’ service) School Certificate £375 Three Years’ Secondary School £325 Career prospects in the Public Service are now attracting more young men with higher educational qualifications into the service. Last year there was a marked increase in the number of entrants with University Entrance examinations, according to the annual report by the Public Service Commission to Parliament.
In 1955-56, for instance, there were only 32 entrants who had passed the university entrance examination. Last year there were 103.
