FAT CATTLE Entries of fat cattle totalled 391 compared with 181 last week. The sale was very buoyant, reflecting the increase in boner cow values to 95s (nearest works). Thus all classes of cows rose by £2 to £3 a head and this rise was also reflected in the market for steers and heifers which improved by about £2 all round. The offering generally was of very acceptable quality. The market for steers was topped by W. K. Wakeman (Kaiapoi) with the sale of two at £45 17s 6d, his line of 17 averaging £43 18s. Top price for iheifers went to A. D. Wylie (Omihi), who sold one at £36 12s 6d. G R. Gould (Rotherham) topped the market for cows with the sale of seven at £3l 12s 6d to £32 12s 6d. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to £45 17s 6d. Prime medium-weight steers, £35 10s to £4l. Prime and light, £3O to £33. Light and plain, up to £29. Prime heavy heifers, up to £36 12s 6d.

STORE CATTLE There was a light yarding of store cattle with only one or two quotable lines. Prices generally were at late rates. Reflecting the increase In schedule prices, boner cows met a buoyant market. Heavy boner cows made £l9 8s 6d to £22 18s 6d, and medium to poorer sorts £ll 8s 6d to £l7 7s 6d. Boner bulls showed no advance on late rates.
National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., sold: on account of client, 36 yearling Aberdeen Angus heifers at £l4 10s 6d to £l6 3s 6d.
DAIRY CATTLE Only 21 dairy cattle were yarded, some of them of very indifferent quality. Good cows suitable for town supply registered a considerable rise, selling from £4O to £53, and cows of poor quality sold down to £22. A few good Friesian heifers made from £3B to £45, with one sale at £55, and the balance of the heifers sold down to £25.
VEALERS With a very small yarding in the veal pens the sale opened at 20s ahead of last week’s good values, and outside competition kept values at a high level throughout. Best runners made to £2B Is, good £22 Is to £24 Is; good suckers £l4 3s 6d to £lB 3s 6d, good small calves £9 3s 6d to £l3 3s 6d, and rough, small calves £4 8s 6d to £7 Ils. FAT PIGS The porker entry was smaller than expected for this stage in the season, but because of the breakdown in railway communication with the West Coast, only one truck from outside districts was to hand. The market opened on a much easier tone, but improved as the sale progressed and finished only a few shillings below the pre-Christmas rates. Baconer entries were much smaller and values showed a slight increase. The chopper entry was a very heavy one, but nevertheless the sale was a good one. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £6 17s 6d to £7 9s 6d. Medium porkers, £7 19s 6d to £8 19s 6d Heavy porkers, £8 14s 6d to £9 9s nd. Light baconers, £9 9s 6d to £lO 7s bd. Medium * baconers, £lO 12s 6d to £ll 2s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll 9s 6d to £l2 14s €d. Choppers, £9 16s to £l5 18s 6d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was the largest for several weeks and consisted mainly of slips and weaners. There was a fairly large attendance of buyers who bid with caution. Values for weaners were easier by 5s to 15s, but best quality large stores practically maintained late rates. One sow with a litter of 10 made £3B and six m-pig sows made £lB to £26. Values were:— Small weaners, 50s to 70s. Best weaners, 82s to 945. Slips, 100 s to 108 s. Small and medium stores, 110 s to 1255. Large stores, to 141 s.
