ADDINGTON MARKET Sharp Rise In Store Lamb And Fat Cattle Prices

A very heavy yarding of store lambs, which met a most buoyant sale, was the feature at Addington Market yesterday. The light entry of other store sheep sold in accordance with late rates. A moderate entry of fat lambs sold to reasonable advantage. Fat sheep generally were in relatively short supply and, the quality being particularly good, values for young wethers and ewes were higher. Fat cattle values rose appreciably.

It was announced tl sales will commence on 1 STORE SHEEP The entry of about 12,000 store sheep included 9930 store lambs, a handful of store hoggets, a few twotooth ewes, and one or two useful pens of adult ewes and wethers. Ewe hoggets sold up to 80s and wether hoggets made from 54s to 60s. There were at least three lines of good, useful farmers’ ewes, which realised 42s to 47s 6d, and most of them auseared to be sound in the feet.

There was a relatively heavy yarding of store lambs, the total being 9930, compared with 3022 at the Christmas market, and some 7000 at the comparable sale in January of last year. The general run of quality was good. An exceptionally large gallery followed the sale, which was a buoyant one from start to finish. Values generally were very high, considering the immediate outlook for lamb, and in many cases left very little margin for fatteners The range of prices was slightly higher than at the comparable sale a year ago, when schedule prices for lamb were Id per lb higher than today’s prices of 24d for up to 281 b and 22d for lambs in the 291 b to 361 b class. At yesterday’s sale, all classes of lambs sold freely, but the highestpriced pens still looked the cheapest. The market for the best lambs was fully 3s to 4s dearer than the rates of two weeks ago. The best of the wether lambs made up to 58s, which was the price paid to D. S. Morris (Cheviot) for a pen of 75. Outstanding in a small entry of ewe lambs were two pens from G. R. Gould (The Hermitage) and A. H. Black (Hawarden), both of which made 61s. Values were:— Extra good lambs, 53s to 58s. Good lambs, 44s to 525. Light and plain, 39s to 425.
