TRAINING OF SHAHWAN

Change To R. Denham (NJ. Press Association—Copyright)

f SYDNEY, January 8. The top-class New Zealand horse. Shahwan, has had a change of trainer. His owner, Mr F. H. Pollard, a New Zealand schoolteacher, has switched Shahwan from Jack Denham to his brother, R. (Mick) Denham.

Mr J. Pollard, brother of Shahwan’s owner, said today: “The change of trainers was a mutual agreement. Mick Denham went acroSs to New Zealand and brought Shahwan and Sombrero to Australia.

“My brother decided that Mick Denham was entitled to one of the horses after his long trip to bring them to Australia.”

Sombrero is being trained for the Sydney Cup in April, but Jack Denham has detected lameness in Sombrero’s near foreleg. The fetlock joint is swollen, and the injury could cause Sombrero’s withdrawal from the major autumn races.

Sombrero is qnder veterinary treatment. He will have to be given a race before Denham will know if he can stand an arduous autumn preparation.
