INJURED MAN DIES
Rifle Wound In Stomach
'New Zealand Press Association) GORE, January 7.
Waaka Brown, aged 28, a shearer, of Te Araroa, has died after being in the Gore Public Hospital for more than a week, suffering from a rifle wound in the stomach. An inquest is to be held. Mr Brown, who had been shearing in the district, was admitted to hospital early on December 27, after an incident in a house in Brown street.
He suffered grave abdominal injuries, and, although his condition subsequently showed improvement, he remained on the seriously ill list. When he was able to make a statement to the police, Mr Brown said that the wounding was accidental. He had seized a .22 calibre riflle by the barrel, not realising that the rifle was loaded, and it had discharged.
Escapers Caught—Two youths who escaped from the Cherry Farm Hospital, just north of Dunedin, on Saturday night, were apprehended by the Ashburton police on Sunday morning. They were taken back to Dunedin.— (P.A.)
