RAIL-CAR HITS VAN

Driver Not Injured

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 7. A Dunedin van driver had a remarkable escape this morning on the railway crossing on the Middlemarch-Ranfurly highway. He stepped out of his van unhurt after the 6.30 a.m. rail-car from Cromwell swept it from the tracks, causing it to spin around several times before stopping several yards away. Damage to the van, driven by Mr Gorvan Sexton, was considerable. The rail-car was only slightly dented, and was able to continue to Dunedin, arriving 33 minutes late. The accident occurred about 10.7 a.m. about a mile north of Middlemarch.

It was the second incident involving a rail-car on this line in two days. On Sunday night a small slip occurred on the line near Lauder, and the Cromwellbound rail-car ploughed into the debris. The rail-car was unable to complete the trip, and passengers had to carry on by bus. Its fuel tanks were burst open, and equipment along the side of the car was damaged. Shortly after the accident, which occurred at 8.10 p.m., the rail-car was towed back to Dunedin for repairs.
