RACING Tamarisk In Form For Reefton Race

Tamarisk and Beau Revere, two consistent campaigners on the South Canterbury-North Otago holiday circuit, are expected to play principal roles in the finish of the New Year Handicap at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow.

The New Year Handicap is run over seven furlongs, and is the second leg of the double.

Tamarisk and Beau Revere met twice at the South Canterbury meeting, and honours were with Tamarisk. He finished strongly to beat Beau Revere by half a head in the Rangitata Handicap, one mile and 35 yards, on the first day at Washdyke. Two days later Tamarisk beat all but Watch and Wait over the same distance in the Christmas Handicap. Beau Revere was a weakening eighth this time.

Tamarisk and Beau Revere did not meet again on the circuit. Tamarisk raced creditably over more ground, and Beau Revere was kept to sprinting. Tamarisk was a fast-finishing third in the Waikouaiti Cup, won by his stablemate, Motueka. A day later he ran Motueka to a neck in the President’s Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Oamaru. Beau Revere’s Record

Beau Revere’s record for Waikouaiti and Oamaru was one win and one second. He was soundly beaten by Purser over six furlongs at Waikouaiti but won narrowly over the same distance at Oamaru.

Tamarisk is 61b below Beau Revere in the weights at Reefton, and is expected to be the Orari horse’s master at seven furlongs. The only horse above Beau Revere in the weights is his stablemate. Appreciate. Appreciate did nothing of note at the South Canterbury meeting, but was in the early stages of another campaign, and he should be one of the improvers in this field. Tonka is a last-start winner at Reefton, and will be solidly supported to improve his record there. He could do no better than third against the hack sprinters there on December 14, but came out later in the day to win the County Handicap, seven furlongs, quite easily. The runner-up, but two and a half lengths back, was Beau Revere, which carried less weight.

Beau Revere has shown since that he had benefited from his racing on that circuit, but he will almost certainly find Tonka hard to beat again tomorrow. Fresh Start Lucky Sal will be making a fresh start for the season, but she sprinted fast at Riccarton before Christmas and is well forward. She will probably be the best of those below 8-0. The first leg of the double is the Mawheraiti Hack Handicap. One of the best prospects at the distance, six furlongs, will probably be the Riccarton-trained three-

year-old, Bon Salut, a Gabador gelding owned by N. H. McDonald and Mrs MacDonald. Three starts back Bon Salut beat all but Purser and Tripped at Hororata after leading .into the last of seven furlongs. His best since was fourth in the Central Handicap on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting. He was seventh of 10 in the corresponding race on the second day of the meeting. With Kaseno missing—he has been scratched for his three en-, gagements at the meeting—Bon Salut may find Rising High and Arabian Stream his strongest opponents.

Arabian Stream is still on the reserve list, and will re-enter the field if there are three scratchings. Selections:—
