King Star In Lead All The Way At Greymouth

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH, January 6. King Star led from start to finish to win the Dominion Handicap at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meting today but he had little to spare

over the last furlong from Clifton Volo. King Star, Chief Lady, which had trailed him all the way, Helen Patch and Clifton Volo drew clear by four lengths from Bessie Brigade racing to the straight, with the others well beaten. King Star was strongly challenged by Chief Lady and Helen Patch soon after straightening up and just after he had taken their measure Clifton Volo put in her claim along the inside.

Clifton Volo looked likely to win 50 yards out, but came to the end of her run soon after, and King Star was holding her, with a half neck advantage at the post. Clifton Volo had every chance, and was a length in front of Helen Patch, which beat Chief Lady by a nose for third. Bessie Brigade, which broke in the middle stages of the race, was 10 lengths back fifth, five lengths in front of Disraeli. Easy Win for Composite

Composite brought a welcome change of luck to the Rolleston trainer, O. M. Quinlan, when he won the Runanga Handicap. He broke when handy with half a mile to run, but settled doWn again quickly. He joined Supercraft racing to the straight with Spotless, Stingray and Gold Craze next.

Composite was soon clear, and he came on to win with something in hand by two lengths and a half. Spotless, after being handy over the last mile, held on for second a neck in front of the tiring Supercraft. Stingray, which was never really a danger, was beaten off fourth, clear of Gold Graze, Dalgelia. Red Jenny and Gay Flame. Dalgelia Surprises

Dalgelia, the outsider, won the second race for trotters, the County Handicap. She was near the rear early, but soon improved to be third at the half-mile. Gay Flame and Supercraft were together racing to the straight two lengths in front of Dalgelia. with Stingray the only other possibility. Once into the straight, Supercraft dropped out, and Dalgelia moved up to Gay Flame. They had a keen struggle with Dalgelia finishing best to win by half a length. Gay Flame was not disgraced as she raced wide in the early part of the race. Supercraft was three lengths back third, four lengths in front of Stingray, with Spotless. Composite and Superway next. Radiotron in Form

Radiotron trailed to the straight in the Empire Handicap and then came away to gain his second win at the meeting. Satellite, the outsider of the field, set a strong pace, which had the majority of the field in trouble before the straight. Radiotron was beginning to close on Satellite at this stage with Fyvie Queen, General Advance and Laughlin’s Lass handiest of the others. Radiotron responded well when asked for an effort and sprinted away to win easing up by six lengths. Satellite ran on much better than on the first day meeting to take second place, half a head in front of General

Advance, which made up a little ground in the straight. Fyvie Queen stopped badly over the last 50 yards, and was a short length back fourth, eight lengths in front of Brawl, with Laughlin’s Lass next, clear of Springvale. Daisy Doro Wins

Daisy Doro, which is raced by the Templeton trainer, C. C. Devine, and which is trained at Westport by W. C. Walsh, gained a good win in the New Year Handicap. She went to the front at the mile post and kept clear of the dthers in the straight. She turned for home two lengths in front of the tiring Kohika Lass, with Alert next ahead of Sanfarer and Ledger (wide out). Once into the straight,, Daisy Doro had too much in reserve and she won decisively by two lengths from the backmarker, Noble Emperor, which made up considerable ground in the straight. Sanfarer was a length and a half back, third, a similar distance in front of Alert, with Ledger fifth, clear of Kohika Lass, which did not handle the going.
