Newspapers’ Views On Macmillan’s Tour Differ

(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 2. The “Daily Mirror” claimed today that Commonwealth Prime Ministers would gladly agree to d postponement of the forthcoming Commonwealth tour by the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) so that he could go to Moscow for talk? with the Russian leaders. “Even if the Prime Ministei returned from Moscow emptyhanded, everybody would know he was right to have tried.” the newspaper said. The “Yorkshire Post” believed Mr Macmillan's Commonwealth tour would be of value in framing policy wifh President Eisenhower and other N.A.T.O leaders. “During his tour he will have opportunities to discuss worVd

problems with leaders of opinion in Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and Ceylon,” it said. “It will enable him to show his interest in the vast projects some of them have in hand and to discuss ways in which this country and they can be of mutual help. “But. most important of all." said the “Yorkshire Post.” “it will ensure that he knows their views when he comes later to frame policy with President Eisenhower and other N.A.T.O. leaders. He will enter the conference room fortified by his contact with the minds of his Commonwealth colleagues.” It was announced last night that Mr Macmillan would review the recent Paris N.A.T.O. meeting in a nation-wide radio broadcast on Saturday night.
