Political Purposes Alleged

(Rec. 8.30 p.m) • SYDNEY, January 2.

A former Labour Minister, Senator William Ashley, accused the Federal Government today of using Imperial honours for political purposes. The New Year honours list showed the Government was creating “knights by the dozen.” he said.

“Many of the recipients of knighthoods and minor honours have been rewarded for past political services.” It was high time an inquiry was held into the method of recommending the honours, the value of which was being reduced to “utter absurdity,” Senator I Ashley said.
