Sir,—Recently, President Soekjmo, of Indonesia, a devout Mohammedan and leader of a nation of 82 million, of whom nine out of every ten are Mohammedans, flew 900 miles from the nation’s capital into Sumatra to speak to a gathering of people of a different religion. It was called the Eastern Asia Christian Conference, and the 120 delegates there came from 24 nations. They represented the World Council of Churches.—Yours, etc, PEACE ON EARTH. December 31, 1957.
Post Office Clock.—The Post Office clock chimed the hours after New Year’s Eve for two days much to the surprise of many persons. The clock, which used to awaken sleepers in city hotels about Cathedral Square a few years ago and was silenced, is permitted to ring out each old year and usher in each new one. The clock is maintained by the Municipal Electricity Department It stopped chiming for another year yesterday afternoon.
