RAIN SPOILS SPORTS
Timaru Caledonian Society
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU. January 2. Steady rain made conditions very unfavourable for the South Canterbury Caledonian Society’s New Year sports meeting at the Caledonian grounds on Wednesday. Usually a turf which provides a good footing, the Caledonian grounds were drenched by heavy rain during the day and it was a most uncomfortable setting for both competitors and spectators.
In former years this meeting nas been the rendezvous for thousands of hpliday visitors to Timaru, but the attendance was affected considerably yesterday by the wet weather Amateur and cash cycling events normally the big drawcard, were cancelled because of the dangerous state of the track. Dancing events also were cancelled.
In spite of the track and weathet hazards there were some excellent performances by athletes in running and field events. I. J. Kerr was the top-line sprinter, winning both the 100 and 220 yards events. K. Williams won the one mile off the scratch mark in 4min 25sec. G F. Hack. 1957 winner of the UBO yards, completed a “double” in this event. Yesterday he returned the remarkably good time under the conditions of Imin 58sec off the 10 yards mark. Winnie Garrod won the javelin throw with Valerie Sloper in second place. Miss Sloper was second in the shot put. her distance being 45ft 9in Results:— Piping Events Slow airs, C grade: R.
