FREAK WEATHER IN AUSTRALIA
“From Near Winter To A Heat-Wave” (Rec. 9 p.m.)
MELBOURNE, December 29. A freak weather pattern has extended across Australia over the week-end ranging from near winter conditions in the West, heavy rain in Central Australia, to a heat-wave in the Eastern States. In Perth, temperatures have been recorded at 66.2 degrees—l 4 degrees below normal Although scattered rain fell in the west, parched crops received little relief. However, the normally dry Northern Territory reported several exceptional falls. The downpour turned thousands of square miles of Australia’s centre into a quagmire. Many homesteads were isolated and the road from Adelaide to Alice Springs was dotted with stranded cars. Temperatures in the eastern States reached their zenith in Western Queensland where 114 degrees were recorded. New South Wales reached the century mark and Melbourne recorded the hottest day of the summer so far with a maximum tem-j perature of 97 degrees. 1
