PROPELLER FOULED BY ROPE
Spear Fisherman Frees Tangled Line (New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, December 29. An underwater spear-fisherman was called in yesterday afternoon, at Opua. to free the starboard propeller of the 11,500-ton Canopic from four turns of an Bin jnanilla mooring line. He was Mr R. R. Kershaw, of Russell. The rope had inadvertently become entangled with the propeller while the ship was berthing. Mr Alan Larcombe and his wife (who was Miss Mira Lane, a wellknown Northland swimmer) attempted to free the propeller with some success. But it was decided that, without underwater breathing equipment, it was impossible to complete the job. Mr Kershaw said he found four turns round the propeller and two bights round each blade. He was able to get the rope free except for one turn round the propeller boss and then, because he was running out of compressed air, permission was given to cut the rope. The job took himi from about 2.15 p.m. until 5.30 p.m.
