TEST DRAW IN SOUTH AFRICA

W. Grout’s World Record

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 28.

The young Australian cricket team, without N. Harvey, after losing the toss, put up a great performance to draw the first- test against the experienced South Africa side at Johannesburg on Saturday. With Harvey’s aggressive batting and his tactical experience on the field, Australia could prove a formidable combination before the series is over.

W. Grout, the 31-year-old wicket-keeper, playing in his first test, established a world record by taking six wickets in a single innings of a test match—all of them caught. The Australians who have so long held K. Mackay up to criticism would have been proud of his unbeaten innings of 65, which took 225 minutes and played a tremendous part in saving the m£tch for Australia. After losing the toSs and having to chase a score of 470, Australia hit back, and with Benaud’s scintillating century it was able to finish with 368.

Then it shook South Africa by dismissing four of its top batsmen for 19 runs in the second innings. , Waite and Endean retrieved the position for South Africa with a fifth wicket stand of 129 and South ■Africa ended the fourth day wijh ■76 for five. g Davidson’s Bowling t But Australia came back on ■Saturday morning and the fast Bbowlers Davidson and Meckiff dis■missed the remaining five batsmen (for only 25 runs.
