Unusual Cause Of Fire
“Children placing fireworks in knot-holes” caused a fire in a power pole at Mount Pleasant last month. That was one of the most unusual causes of fires in a long list reported to the Christchurch Fire Board last evening by the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond). Over-heating electric ovens was again the most common cause of household fires in November. Five cases of fire were listed as being investigated by the police. Four of them were at the Federal Hotel, and the other was at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Station, Wigram. There were six cases of sparks from rubbish fires causing fires of fences or walls. During the month there were 46 fire calls answered compared with 42 in November of last year. Chimney fires numbered 11 (six in November, 1956), herbage, grass and rubbish 54 (31), automatic false alarms 21 (13), Justifiable false alarms 13 (10), malicious f our (five) and special service call, one (nil). The board’s engines ran 3894 miler to fires during the month.
