Christchurch Airport
■Sir— An interesting point is raised by youp correspondent, ■“Wing Span," when he suggests that the mural for the new airport building be subject to open competition. This would certainly be a welcome innovation, if for no other reason than increasing the architect’s—and the public’s—awareness of what is offering. The handful of murals at present in Christchurch are largely the work of two or three artists, certainly every capable but hardly representative of air that is available. Unless an artist is also a very good salesman, paid commissions are extremely difficult to come by, and much talent remains unwanted and unused. I feel sure that a well-publicised competition would benefit architects, public, and the unhappilv garreted.—Yours, etc., TA L ’«• December 3. 1957.
