FLATS FOR NEW SETTLERS
Three Families Be Housed Three self-contained flats for immigrant families will be offi-: daily opened by the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery j (the Rev. W. M. Hendrie) on Sun- i day at 2.30 p.m. The flats have J been constructed in the old St. David’s manse, Sydenham. , The first tenants will be three i Dutch families, which are expected to arrive in Christchurch on Tuesday. The flats will provide a : temporary home until the immi-; grants find suitable homes and• establish themselves in work. Built in 1870 as a farm home- I stead, the building is still in good ' condition and has been remodel- i led and renovated throughout. A committtee, headed by the Minister of St. David’s (the Rev. K. , L. Warren), of interested church persons has made a striking I change. Each flat has a kitchenette with ' gas cooker and electric hot-water I service, a large livingroom and one bedroom upstairs. Basic 1 furniture and floor coverings have been .given by church members throughout the city, and working bees have tidied the grounds and cleaned and polished the interior of the building to make everything ready for the incoming tenants. The flats were provided by the Christchurch Presbytery in answer to a plea from the Government to the churches to help to provide accommodation for immigrant families.
The Arctic barnacle will not breed as long as the temperature stays as high as 60 degrees.
