MARSHLAND ROAD SMELL
Fermented Grass The Gause b An unpleasant smell is causing concern among residents of the Briggs road-Marshland road area. The smell, which was first noticed on Friday, has been getting steadily worse and reached its peak yesterday morning. At 10 o’clock, it was so strong that one housewife could not venture outside to hang her washing to dry. Mr E. Ball, of 115 Marshland road, said he thought an open drain, which Puns along the west side of the road, was responsible for the smell. Other residents blamed a nearby pigfarm, ensilage, and sewerage work in Briggs road. However, investigations by a reporter revealed that the smell came from a 10-acre paddock which is being cleared for the erection of an hotel. The contractor. Mr W. G. Evans, said that before the land was levelled off. top soil and foliage was bulldozed into a large mound. “Over the months the grass has fermented, and last week, when we opened the mound to spread the soil over the levelled sand, the smell naturally got worse.’’ he said
Mr Evans said the smell would be gone in several days.
