Table Tennis SECOND ROUND MATCHES

H. E. Barton, of the Lyttelton team, was outstanding when the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s first grade summer competition was continued last evening. Barton, a very experienced player, showed all his former guile to beat the three members of the strong University I team. University I won most of the other matches. In the other contests. University II beat Papanui, and Avonside drew with Ministry of Works.
In winning all his singles matches. Barton used his strong forehand attack well. He used a bat covered in thin sponge, and his consistent play was too much for his young anti impetuous opponents. D. Stewart matched Barton in patience, but Barton won the decisive points. D Hill was the most, impressive of the University team. He also used a sponge bat. University II had a surprisingly easy victory over Papanui. The best player of the contest was the much-improved J. L. Kyle. Kyle, who uses a bat covered in very thick, soft sponge, was able to vary the pace and spin of his shots very deceptively. R. Prosser also won all
of his singles matches for the winning team. A. Bond, of Papanui, was not quite as impressive as he was in the first round.
Ministry of Works and Avonside had a very close contest. Ministry of Works won the first three matches. and later led, 4-2. but Avonside won the later matches. C. J. Tippens hit hard to beat the pengrip player, T. P. Staples. The best Avonside player was D. Stapley. who showed a good all-round game. Stapley lost only to the very awkward J. J. Dunne. Stapley and Tippens led. 20-17. in the second game of their last doubles match, against Stapley and A. A. Swanston, but the Ministry of Works pair fought back to draw. After two rounds, points are:— University I 4, University II 4. Ministry of Works 3. Avonside 1, Papanui 0. Lyttelton 0. Results were:— University I v. Lyttelton Singles.—D. D. M. Stewart lost to H.
