Jumping Events
The jumping events held on Wednesday provided many fine displays in the open six bar event, and the maiden, lightweight and heavy-weight hunters’ classes. The ground was in capital order, although rain early in the afternoon might have affected the take-off at several jumps and caused horses to slip into their fences.
The open six bar event soon found weaknesses, for at the end of the first round only four competitors remained in, and in the second round one of these was eliminated. In the third round, when the bar was raised three inches and only four fences had to be jumped, Araan, a handy type of jumper nominated by Misses A. and E. Ashton, was the only one to clear the bars safely. Royal Mac, in Mr G. H. McClintock’s nomination; jumped well until he struck very hard and so ended his chances.
Revelenta, which has enjoyed some success at previous shows at Addington, won the lightweight hunters’ contest with the form it displayed 12 months ago. but it could not have had many points in its favour over Miss Jane Wilding’s William and Mr D. C. Gould’s Cherrywood, both of which were well ridden and gave finished displays.
In the heavy-weight hunters the nominated field of six was reduced by scratchings, and Miss B. McFarlane’s Smuggler gave a dashing display to take the honours from H. H. Elworthy and A. Hargreaves’ Pharoah and E. G. O. Rutherford’s Radar.
