CANTERBURY HISTORY
Publication This Month
The first volume of the Canterbury centennial history will be published in about two weeks. The printers have finished their work and binding is now in progress. This announcement was made yesterday by Professor N. C. Phillips, chairman of the historical committee of the Canterbury Centennial Association. The decision to extend the history to three separate but uniform volumes was made more than a year ago because of the wealth of new material which has come to light during recent years’ concentrated research into the early days of the province. The first volume contains a general introduction by the joint editors (Sir James Hight and Mr C R. Straubel). a geographical description by Professor George Jobberns. and then the early part of the history with 42 illustrations and eight informative appendices. The period from “pre-history” up to 1850, including both Maori and early European settlement, is covered by Mr Straubel. The Canterbury Association and its settlement is described by Professor L. C. Webb (now of the Australian National University at Canberra).
Professor Phillips said work was proceeding on the second and third volumes, which would not necessarily appear in sequence. The second volume will deal with the Provincial Government period from 1854 to 1876. and the third will bring the record up to date.
