Burwood Celebrates Anniversary
The Burwood Country Women’s Institute celebrated its nineteenth birthday in the Rowe Memorial Hall. Shirley. recently. Mrs Newton presided and welcomed visitors from institutes in the Canterbury Federation, from a local church guild and some from the newly-formed Canterbury East Federation.
Mrs Davis, representing the Dominion executive, called for support for the Save the Children Fund. She spoke of the holo Burwood had given to charitable causes, and especially to the Burwood Hospital. Mrs Sandv a Dominion councillor, also spoke. Members who had assisted in the making of the cake assisted in the ceremon* of cutting and lighting the candles. Mrs Newton presented Mrs A Taylor with the Liggins Cup awarded for the most points in competitions, and Mrs Ramsay received a gift for most points in the floral section.
Items were given by the following: Mesdames Bryant. Dendle and McElhinney ’vocal solos), the choir led by Mrs Masi in (a bracket of three vocal solos), and several members ’three sketches’
