WOMAN SHEEP EXHIBITOR

Miss B. Spence’s

Atvards

Miss Betty Spence, of Pateora. Central Otago, was one of the most successful exhibitors in the sheep section at the Canterbury, Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Metropolitan Show yesterday.

Miss Spence was awarded a first, a second, a third and a sixth in the class for ram hoggets in natural condition; a first in the class for a ewe above 30 months with lamb at foot; a first, a second, a fourth and a fifth in the class for hogget ewes in natural condition, and she had several other minor placings. Mr H. C. Barton (Seddon), one of the judges in the Corriedale section. said that in the natural condition ewe hogget class, the best of the sections he judged. Miss Spence's entries were a credit to her.

Wearing smartly-cut jodhpurs and a hack jacket, Miss Spence said yesterday that this was her best effort to date in the five years she had been exhibiting. Although she had done all the work on her entries. Miss Spence did not take full credit for her successes. “The climate where we live in Central Otago is particularly good for Corriedales,” she said.

Miss Spence works on her father’s sheep run in the Maniototo Plain and her interest in sheep developed gradually and will, no doubt, last a life time. Some years ago she lived in Christchurch and was a pupil at Cashmere primary school.
