SWIMMERS SET RECORDS

Several Southland swimmers had an unexpected and meteoric rise to top form at the Collegiate Swimming Club’s carnival recently. The first carnival of the season in Invercargill, it provided some outstanding times and new Southland records. The effort bodes well for Southland's chances at the national championships in Christchurch in February. Thirteen-year-old Eileen North clipped 14 seconds off her own Southland record for 220 yards backstroke, with a time of 2min 55.45ec. In the same race, the senior women’s backstroke champion. Mary Rae. covered the distance in 2min 50sec —2.2 sec better than her Southland record. Miss Rae also won the 100 yards backstroke in 72.2sec—.8sec faster than her Southland record.

Other good times were recorded at the meeting by John Flynn, the Southland champion and New Zealand intermediate 100 and 220 yard freestyle title-holder, and the 14-year-old Otago sprinter, Lynden Olds.
