“Stony ground is not always unfruitful.” said a caption to a photograph published this week in the “Evening Post,” Wellington, which illustrated very clearly one of the reasons why R. W. Blair was able to take 17 wickets for Petone United against Upper Hutt last Saturday. An earlier report from Wellington said the pitch on which the match was played was powdery and did not play true, but the published photograph showed flints, some of them the size of a sixpence, that were removed from the pitch "on which Blair operated."
