MELBOURNE CUP LOTTERY

Consecutive Tickets Draw Horses

(New Zealand Press Association) 1 WELLINGTON. November 12. | The odds of two overseas lottery tickets with consecutive numbers each drawing a horse in the Melbourne Cup were assessed by mathematically - minded employees of two Wellington companies today as something like one in two and a half billion. Yet lit happened in Wellington a few days ago. A worker at the General Post I Office, Mr J. M. Birkett, and a Kelburn carrier, Mr John Gibson, who were complete strangers, ! bought independently from a Wellington agent a ticket each lin an overseas lottery. Each ticket drew a horse and, I although the horses were not i placed, this entitled the drawers to prizes of £156 5s each. i Mr Gibson’s ticket was No. j 43642. and drew Nether Gold. Mr i Birkett’s was No. 43643, and drew Baron Boissier.
