N.Z. DAIRY PRODUCE

Call For Better Advertising

(New Zealand. Press Association) PALMERSTON Nth., Nov. 12. New Zealand dairy produce has’ lost pride of place on the Eri-j fish market because of more intensive advertising campaigns by other competing countries, in the opinion of Mr M. H. Oram, a son of Sir Matthew Oram and Lady Oram, who is visiting New Zea- i land to see his parents. For the last 14 years. Mr Oram has lived | in Britain and is the present! actuary and manager of the! National Mutual Life Assurance Society. Mr Oram said that at the end of, the war the New Zealand product was justifiably held in high . regard by the British housewife.) Its prestige at that stage could, never have been higher, but for some reason it had gradually lost! its pride of place. “This unenviable position has, nothing to do with the question of supply or quality, but the fact) that other countries competing for the British market have indulged in advertising campaigns which have produced a demand for their products to the detriment of New Zealand butter and cheese,” he Baid. New Zealand advertised fairly! extensively, but the impact of the advertising did not appear to be professional. It was by no means) ns convincing as that of other countries. The position should cause New! Zealand same concern. The British market was being flooded with goods from many overseas countries—even South Africa had now joined the field as a serious rival—and the impression had been created that because their products were dearer, the quality must be better. New Zealand publicity had to discount that impression, he said. Elderly Man’s Death.— An elderly man died suddenly at his home at 68 Walters road. Mairehau. about 4 p.m. yesterday. He was Herbert Ashton, aaed 72. An inquest will be opened this morning before the Coroner iMr E. B. E. Taylor).
