Boxing Six Welter-Weight Contestants

Australia's George Barnes, British Empire welter-weight champion, is among six boxers named today to compete in a tournament for the vacant world welter-weight championship. The title became vacant when Carmen Basilio won the world middle-weight championship from "Sugar" Ray Robinson on September 23. . Under the present rules, no champion is permitted to hold two world titles at the same time. The others selected by the world championship committee were Virgil Akins (United States). Vince Martinez (United States). Gil Turner (United States). Isaac, Logart (Cuba) and Gaspar Ortega (Mexico).
