Christchurch Woman To Attend Paris Meeting

Miss Daphne Chapman. of Christchurch, has been appointed as a representative of the Internationa] Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs at the session of the Commission on Human Rights to be held in Paris from March 10 to April 4, 1958. A keen student of international affairs and the . United Nations. Miss Chapman will sail from Auckland on December 20 on a two years’ tour of AustraliaEurope and Britain. The International Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs was granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in 1947, and since then Miss Chapman has been responsible for the direction of United Nations work among the clubs in New Zealand. She was recently appointed a member of the United Nations Fellowship committee oi the International Federation. This committee, which has five members, selects the holder oi a fellowship to study at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Miss Chapman has just relinquished the office of United Nations chairman within the New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. Eormer President

Miss Chapman has oeen a member of the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club since 1938 and has held many offices, including that of president. The New Zealand Federation was formed in 1939 and Miss Chapman has been a member of the executive since 1939. She has taken a prominent part in its affairs and was president from 1946 to 1950.

Miss Chapman is a former executive member of the Christchurch area of the Pan Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association and is an executive member of the Christchurch Soroptimists’ Club. She has been a member of the United Nations Association in Christchurch since its formation. For several years she was the New Zealand representative on the Laws and Sut-

frage Committee of the international Council of Women. Miss Chapman is a voluntary helper at the Christchurch Young Women’s Christian Association and is a member of the Board of Governors of the Avonside Girls

High School. Cooking is one of her hobbies! and even in this field one of hei main interests is international dishes. She is also interested in Maori affairs and has made a study of the Maori language. Training Seminar On arrival in Australia, Miss Chapman will attend a training seminar at Melbourne which has been sponsored by the Australian Y.W.C.A. From Melbourne, she will sail for Genoa and will then travel overland to Paris to attend the session of the Commission on Human Rights. Miss Chapman will spend a great deal of time in England touring the country and visiting Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and in May, 1958, she will go lo Mannheim, in Western Germany, to attend a board meeting of the International Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. She will also attend international meetings of the Y.W.C.A. in Switzerland and Greece. Born in Christchurch. Miss Chapman was educated at the Christchurch Girls’ High School. She is a member of the staff ol a Christchurch legal office.
