GAS SUPPLY AT LYTTELTON
Slight Improvement Yesterday Gas was again in short supply at Lyttelton yesterday morning, most houses having none at all. There was plenty of gas in No 2 holder at the works but it was not reaching the mains. The booster pump was operating only on No. 1 holder. Mr H. Turrall, the gasworks manager, yesterday cleared the blockage in the main from No. 2 holder. Yesterday afternoon, the supply was better with plenty of pressure but the gas contained excessive air. The Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) said the blocked main had been cleared and other adjustments and repairs were being made. Though the works were old. they were still in good order, he said. He explained that there were three beds each of five retorts. Two of the retorts were closed down. An effort was being made to obtain the services of a gas expert to inspect the works and to report to the council, he said. The supply should be normal today, said Mr Thompson, but, he added, “we are keeping our fingers crossed.’’
