Desert Gold Stakes Guide For Oaks

In the last three years the Wellington Racing Club’s Desert Gold Stakes has been an absoiutely correct guide for the New Zealand Oaks. Glenlee, Gentle Lu. and Passive have all taken the double.

The Desert Gold Stakes is one of the attractions, on the programme for the second day of the Wellington spring meeting on Saturday.

The South Island will be represented by Del Monte and Sarcelle. both Ricca rton-trained fillies.

Del Monte is trained by C. C. McCarthy, who prepared Indian Dawn for her success in the first contest of the Desert Gold Stakes in the 1946-47 season. That year, the rare was run at the Wellington Cup meeting in January. Indian Dawn was unplaced in the New Zealand Oaks, won by Sakuntala. that season.

Indian Dawn has been one of only two winners of the Desert Gold Stakes. The other was Flying Sovereign in 1948.
