FRESH HORSES CREATE INTEREST AT TRENTHAM
‘The Press” Special Service
WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. Interest in training at Trentham this morning centred in the appearance of fresh horses which have engagements on the concluding days of the Wellington spring meeting. Few of them were given exacting tasks, most trainers being content to give their candidates serviceable gallops. Morelia and Credit recorded the best half-mile, and good sprints were performed by Cabonne. Boree, Postman. and Warwick. Peterford and Somaliland were impressive over seven furlongs without being asked for their best. The outside of the course proper was available for fast work, and the going was perfect. Sprinting down the straight six furlongs chute, Morelia (C. P. Dixon) and Credit (R. G. Forbes) were together. four lengths ahead of Hoya (H. Barber) at the end of half a mile in 49 4-ssec. Morelia, an unraced filly by Faux Tirage, out of Solar Metal, was doing better than Credit at the end. Credit is to have her first race at the meeting in the Karitane Handicap. At her only appearance, she made up ground for seventh in the Nursery Handicap at Masterton. Morelia is not engaged at the meeting. She has been brought to Trentham in the hope that the trip will settle her down. Hoya made the pace to the furlong, but she stopped quickly. She had the worst of the weight. Cabonne (G. O. Smith) was doing better than Boree (W. A. Smith) alter running half a mile on the course property in 51sec. the final three furlongs taking 38sec. Cabonne. which finished third at Masterton when making her debut, is to race on Labour Day. Boree has had three starts for two seconds and a third, and on those performances she will have to be respected in the Karitane Handicap! on Saturday, in which the class is not strong. Came Home Well Stretching out in the final stages only. Postman <C. H. Mackie) beat Search Warrant (R. J. Skelton) by a length at the end of half a mile in 51 l-ssec, the final three furlongs taking 36 4-ssec. After a promising third at Waipukurau at his first appearance after a spell. Postman failed at Masterton. lie looks improved and is well drawn in the Awatea Handicap. Search Warrant did well for a maiden, and is not without prospects in the Trial Stakes. Looking all the better for his outing in the Shorts Handicap last week.
Warwick (W. R. Hooton) stroke over! half a mile comfortably in 51 3-ssec, coming from the three furlongs in 37sec. He will be suited by the additional furlong of the Awatea Handicap. Peterford (K. D. Campbell) was too good for Royal Warrant (G. O Smith) at the end of seven furloftgs. being three lengths ahead and recording Imin 23sec. Peterford came home easily from the half-mile in 52 4-ssec. and from the three furion es in 39 l-ssec. His prospects in the Watkins Handicap will he enhanced if the going becomes heavy. Somaliland (K. Sheard) was a length ahead of Bollinger (W. J. Mudlord) after running seven furlongs in Imin Msec. the last four in 52sec, and the final three in 38 3-ssec. Somaliland has not looked back since she scored at Masterton, and she will have to be taken into consideration in the Belmont Hack Handicap. Turon (Mrs Jones) was restrained while running half a mile in 55sec. coming from the three furlongs in ?9sec. He is to race next in the Pearce Mondicap on the final day of the meeting. Due to Improve Nuffield (R. Ackland) ran the last four of seven furlongs in 51 4-ssec, taking 38see for the' final three. He is to revert, to his favourite distance, seven furlongs, in the Awatea Handicap. He was a promising sixth in the Wainui Handicap, one mile, on Saturday, and it may not be long before he regains winning form. Seraphic (R. G. Forbes) was more impressive than Nonchalant (W. R. Hooton) over five furlongs in Imin 7sec. the last four taking 52-ec. and the final three 39sec. Both are Trial Stakes candidates. Nonchalant has one minor placing to his credit this season, and Seraphic beat all but Lady Cressida at New Plymouth h*s only start following a spell. Ho has a wide barrier nos’t’on to overcome this week. The stablemates. Regal Stuart (W. D. Wylie) and Affaire (J. Dixon), were companions over five furlongs, the last four in 51 4-ssec. and the final three in 38 2-ssec. Both have inrnroved with recent racing. Sambula (W. R. Hooton) was not
after time while running three furlongs in 38sec. His chances in the Awatea Handicap will be improved if there is any deterioration in the con- j ditibns. Gaekwar (C. H. Mackie) was doing ' better than King Lear (R. G. Forbes) after running five furlongs in Imin 10 2-ssec, coining from the half-mile in 54sec. and from the three furlongs in 39 4-ssec Worked Easily Royal Frolic iL G. Coles) worked easily from the mile to the five fur- j longs, where he was joined by Ros- , etta (W. A. Smith). They finished together. Royal Frolic running the : mile in Imin 46 2-ssec. The last five i furlongs were run in Imin 7sec, four in 51 l-ssec, and the final three in 38 2-ssec. Royal Frolic has pleased in his work since being at Trentham. He has good form in the north to recommend his chance in the Heretaunga Hack Handicap, having recorded a third, a win. and a fourth 1n his last three attempts. His win. was in the Mokena Hack Handicap at Te Aroha on September 28. Since then he finished fourth in the Hob- ' son Hack Handicap on the opening I day at Ellerslie. Instanter (R Ackland) and Genre <W. D. Wylie) ran the last four of seven furlongs in 52 4-ssec, the final three taking 38 2-ssec. Instanter pulled up sore. Pitfall (K. D. Campbell) did well for a maiden when he left half a mile behind in 50 2-ssec. the final three furlongs taking 37sec. He 1 would need only to reproduce his I track efforts to graduate to hack i class. i
On the trial grass, which was hard, i Bridie <H. Barber) was more im- ' . pressive than King’s Crest. iW. D. j Wylie) over an easy seven furlongs in Imin 38scc. the final half-mile taking 57sec. The fastest part was | the final three furlongs. 41 3-ssec. Bridie worked more freely than she did on Thursday. She was fourth in the Wellington Handicap and should race well again in the Watkins Handicap. Somerset Fair worked keenly over a round. He looks better for his successful outing in the Wainui Handicap. and should have good prospects of adding the Harcourt Stakes to his record on Labour Day. Otara. a newcomer in the Watkins Handicap, was let off with light, work. He looks well, and gave promise of a return to winning form when he finished third to Upperput and De Falla in the Spring Handicap at Ellerslie recently.
