Cement Output Is Making Timber Trade Apprehensive

(New Zealana Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 22.

An increase of 50 per cent, in the output of cement companies in the next few months would oe a serious thing for timber merchants. said the chairman of the New Zealand Timber Merchants' Federation’s timber development committee, Mr G. R. Kcar, of Manawatu, at the federation’s annual conference in New Plymouth today. Mr Kear proposed that action be taken forthwith to establish a timber development association, but this proposal was rejected, and the conference finally decided to recommend to the executive that the question of forming an association be kept under review. The discussion arose after Mr Kear had asked that his committee be allocated £4OOO for a suitable advertising campaign :n newspapers. £5OO for the committee’s school project, and another £5OO for other general requirements.

‘‘We have a good product, and we should push for it.” he said. ‘‘The battle is already joined—

we either lose it by default or do something about it.”

The annual turnover of all the federation’s members was £2O million, he said. ‘‘This is an urgent matter, and time is not on our side.” Mr J. H. Drummond (South Auckland) said his association would lose membership overnight if a levy to provide the £5OOO was imposed. He preferred to see a full report prepared before any action was taken. Mr D. G. O’Toole (Wanganui) proposed a motion, which was later passed, that £5OO be granted for the school project, another £5OO be granted for general purposes, and a full report on the advertising project be submitted Calory Intake in Ireland.—According to a recent report of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations oh dietary habits, the average daily calory intake in Ireland is now 3610. This is the highest figure on the list. New Zealand, with 3400, is second and Denmark, with 3330, third.—Dublin.
