MR HUGH DALTON TO RETIRE

Former Chancellor Of Exchequer (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 21. Mr Hugh Dalton, aged 70. a former Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer, has decided that he will not stand again for Parliament. He announced this today in a letter to his constituency Labour

Party at Bishop Auckland, Durham, in which he wrote: "All | through my public life I have | been keenly conscious of the l| danger of old men staying on too long in established positions.” Mr Dalton was Chancellor of , the Exchequer from 1945 to 1947. A chance conversation with a ' journalist as he was entering the 1 House of Commons in 1947 to I present his supplementary Budget j caused a "leakage” which led to his resignation.

Mr Dalton first entered the Commons in 1924. During World War II he was Minister of Economic Warfare and later served as President of the Board of Trade.

In 1950 he was Minister of Town and Country Planning, and the next year became the first Minister of Local Government and Planning.
