CANCER CAUSED BY PAINT

£1767 Compensation For Widow

The widow of a man who had died of cancer of the bone contracted through working in the paint shop of L. S. Laycock and Company, Ltd., motor body builders (Mr A. W. Brown) was awarded £1767 17s by consent in the Compensation Court yesterday in Christchurch by Judge Dalglish.

Mr B. A. Barrer, who appeared for the widow, Lilian Geraldine McEachen. said that the case was an unusual one and had required a good deal of research. There was at the outset considerable divergence of opinion as to whether the dead man’s condition might have been aplastic anaemia or leukemia. It had been found that the man had cancer of the bone marrow caused by repetitive contact with a particular brand of paint.
