UNITED NATIONS DAY
Observance Plans For Thursday
On Thursday. October 24. United Nations Day will be celebrated for the tenth time. Many displays and addresses have been arranged bv the local branch of the United Nations Association, the secretary 'Mr Brian Harman) said yesterday.
Two shops will window displavs this week. One will be of dolls dressed in national costumes and the other will be a display of posters showing U.N. activities. The Canterbury Public Library will display U.N. literature and posters, and private film clubs have arranged to show U.N. films on their programmes this week. The meeting of the Royal Health Society in Christchurch on Thursday will feature U.N. work in relation to world health. Many schools will have special addresses given to the pupils by visitors and some schools have arranged displavs of posters and dolls in national dress. International Supper
The Banks avenue primary school will be addressed by Mr Harman at its morning assembly on “United Nations Today” and film strips from U.N. headquarters will be shown later in the day. In the evening, the parent-teacher association of the school will hold an international film evening followed bv an international supper. Each dish at the supper will represent a particular nation. The Kaiapoi Borough School will be presented with a U.N. flag hand-made by members of the Pines Beach Country Women’s Institute. The president of the Christchurch branch of the U.N. association (Mr F. J. Armstrong) will address the Kaiapoi School. In 1947. the General Assembly proclaimed October . 24 United Nations Day, to be devoted to informing the world about the aims, purposes and achievements of the United Nations. Since then the observance of United Nations Day has taken a definite pattern in many countries. including the participation of central and local governments, churches, schools. and many other organisations. Last year the celebration of United Nations Day took some unusual forms. In Norway a United Nations crossword puzzle competition was held. The day was jointly observed by the Rotary Clubs of two neighbouring cities in South America—Rivero. Uruguay, and -Livramento, Brazil. In Thailand free books of matches bearing the United Nations emblem were issued.
