Lawn Tennis SECOND GRADE COMPETITION

First Matches Of Season

The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s Inter-club season began with the second grade competition on the hard courts at Wilding Park on Saturday.

First grade matches will begin next Saturday, and it is expected that the senior men’s and senior women’s competitions will start in the early weeks of November, when the grass courts are in order.

Twenty teams, an increase of two on last season, made up two sections each of 10, in the second grade. The winner of the grade last season. St. Martins Valley, began with a comfortable win over Elmwood II by 15 matches to 1 in section 11.

Heathcote Valley, a club recently affiliated to the association, has entered a team in the grade. It beat Riccarton Domain by 11 matches to 5. One match in the second section, between Wigram and North Linwood 11, will be played later. Results:—

Section 1 St. James beat Barrington by 11 matches to. 5; Heathcote Valley beat Riccarton Domain by 11 matches to 5; Woolston beat Avonside by 10 matches to 6; Shirley beat Elmwood I by 11 matches to 5; Waimairi beat North Linwood I by 10 matches to 6

Section II Opawa beat South Christchurch by 14 matches to 2; Cashmere beat Edgeware by 9 matches to 7: St. Martins Valley beat Elmwood II by 15 matches to 1; St. Albans beat St Mary’s by 12 matches to 4.

South Christchurch Night Matches

The first round of the South Christchurch Lawn Tennis Club's night competitions for the Tisdall Cup was played last week. Results were:—

South Christchurch 111 6, Railway Badminton I 0; Waimairi 6, North Beach I 0; Rangiora I 3’4, Linwood 2>' 2 ; St James 6, South Christchurch VI 0; Railway Badminton II 3*2. L.W.R.
