ATHLETICS Miss V. Sloper Breaks Shot, Discus Records

Two records were bettered at the opening of the Canterbury inter-' lub athletic season on Saturday afternoon, both by Miss Valerie Slooer. She broke her own New Zealand shot put record with a distance of 52ft 9‘.in—an improvement of 2ft 3J in on the existing figure—and later beat her Canterbury discus throw record of 140 ff 3in with a distance of 145 ft 71 in In her five attempts with the shot Miss Sloper smt the 8!b 12 4-5 »z weight beyond 50ft each

Excellent Meeting The meeting was the best opening day the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has had since the war. There was an excellent attendance of both spectators and athletes. Many of the Helds were surprisingly large and performances were of a standard not usually achieved till later in the season. Although the grass in the throwing circles was a little long, the general condition of the ground was the best for many years. K. Williams marked his return to Canterbury from Otago with two fine wins in the senior A one and two mile races. His times were 4min 24.8 sec and 9min 48sec. Another good distance run was that of D Dixey, the Canterbury junior harrier champion. in the junior three-quarter mile with a time of 3min 15sec. Sprinters, too. were well ahead of their usual ability at the start of the season, and D Davison, last year’s junior sprint champion, took the senior 100 yards in !o.ssec In the senior C 330 yards P Morrisey, with a time of 36.8 sec. was faster than the Canterbury quartermile champion. B Kerr, whose time in the senior A was 37.25ec. An outstanding performance in th? I middle distance events was a Imin 25sec 660 yards by the Canterbury i representative. D Beauchamp. Women’s Races | The leading competitor in the women’s track races was Miss M. Chamberlain, with wins in the 100 yards and 80 metre hurdles, and a fine last leg in the four by 110 yards relav. where she came from behind to give Technical a win by several yards. In keeping with his form shown in road events at the end of the harrier season. B. Curie ran excellently in the 13-mile road race to beat' A W. Richards oil the same mark. Richards was quite contented with his showing at this stage of the season, however, particularly as he had beaten his previous best tor the course by seven minutes.
